Important Information About Photo Files Sent to Ptarmigan Press

E-mail is a great way to send photos to Ptarmigan Press. There are 3 things to remember if you want your printed photos to look their best.

  • Send photo files in JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif) formats.
We can accept a few other photo formats but those two work the best. Never send photos in Bitmap (.bmp) or GIF (.gif) formats.
  • Send photos with file sizes of 200K or larger.
The bigger the file the better the photo. Small to medium size images that look great on the Web can look very grainy and blurry when printed. We can print a 100K photo file but it won't look very good.
  • Send photos saved at "Highest Quality" or "Maximum Size".
Some file formats (like JPEG) let you specify the the picture quality and/or file size as you save the image. This is true whether you create the file using a digital camera, scanner, or computer. If you have the option, always save at the highest quality.

How can I be sure my photo is good enough? Any portrait taken with a 1 Megapixel (or higher) digital camera set at highest resolution/image quality should work just fine.

Our presses can print very high quality color or black & white photographs. But we are limited by the quality of the photos you send us. Our very best efforts cannot make a low quality photo look good. Send us good photos and we will deliver printed materials that you can be proud of!
